Courageous Hope

Courageous Hope

About This Campaign

I run for a variety of reasons - one of them is to maintain positive mental and physical health. Without intentional, purposed decisions to stay mentally fit, my life would surely have turned out differently. I run for the love of running, for the challenge of accomplishment, for the determined perspective to "keep moving". I am also running for Cameron Helps and Team Unbreakable!

The goal of Cameron Helps is to reduce the stigma of youth mental illness, build awareness of the issues, and to promote the positive aspects of physical health on mental health.

My personal story has been impacted (either directly or indirectly) by mental illness, suicide, addictive behaviors since I was 17 years old. I have lost several members of our family to suicide:
Cousin (at the age of 18) in 1983
Brother (at the age of 20) in 1984
Father (at the age of 42) in 1986

I was suicidal (at the age of 18) after my brother had died and very fortunately was able to experience very positive and life changing events that have helped me to overcome all of these difficulties. I am now 51 and living life as passionately as I can! Despite...

My youngest son still deals with concurrent disorders (since the age of 17 - the past 9 years), addiction, depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation. He has made over 12 self-harm attempts in these past years, with numerous hospital stays, trips to emergency, psychiatric care etc...we marvel at times that he is still with us.

Ruth and I (and our family) have endured much...because we love much! We continue to stand together as a family, being as supportive as we can, having decided long ago that giving up is not an option. We understand the reality of living a life believing that we are "unbreakable". I thoroughly love this motto because of its importance, absolute possibility and undeniable necessity.

Mental health issues can be extremely debilitating - for everyone involved...but can be effectively managed, even prevented.

Help me support Cameron Helps and Team Unbreakable by financially supporting my "Courageous Hope" marathon!

Campaign to Support CameronHelps

CameronHelps aims to prevent teen suicide through awareness, reducing stigma and promoting wellness.

Team Unbreakable, our flagship program, is a recreational run program that promotes better youth mental health through exercise and education.  We team up with schools (as a recreational program available to all) and in several hospitals community health agencies and family health teams (as a run therapy program).   The school program is endorsed by several school boards and has over 1000 students participating every term.   It is supported by a curriculum, materials, and workshops.

Feel free to contact us for more information or to find out if there is a Team Unbreakable near you!

A group of us here in Sudbury are motivated to bring Team Unbreakable run-therapy programs to our city.  We know, on a personal level, the benefits that physical exercise has on promoting positive mental health.  We want to bring this to the young people of our city!

I love this word and what it represents:

UNBREAKABLE

This one word simply describes how CameronHelps wants our youth to feel.  Our goal is for youth to be strong and resilient. We want to give them the tools and resources that instill in them the confidence to overcome the many challenges they may be facing.

Please check out Team Unbreakable online.  Money that we are raising goes towards supporting Team Unbreakable run-therapy programs here in Sudbury.  Thank you for helping!

The Cameron Helps “Courageous Hope” campaign initiated by Darren Parker inspired me to train for my first ever full marathon.

The devastating loss of a loved one to suicide in February 2016 impacted my life in a deeply profound way. Beyond the negative emotions of judgement, guilt, blame and shame, I am positively motivated to help reduce the incidents of suicide and suicide behaviour in our community.

My intention to complete the full marathon is to raise money to bring Sudbury youth the Team Unbreakable program. Team Unbreakable raises awareness and helps reduce the stigma of mental illness and suicide. This school-based, non-competitive run program teaches students the importance of physical activity on their mental health and well-being.

I invite you to join me in this critical initiative by financially supporting the "Courageous Hope" marathon!
